Federal Member for Stirling Michael Keenan has congratulated Balcatta Senior High School and its students on an outstanding art exhibition which honours Australia’s war history ahead of Remembrance Day.
The Armistice Centenary Project Exhibition at the Osborne Park RSL opened its doors to the public today and will run until midday on November 9.
The exhibition features artwork from Balcatta’s Year 9 Gifted and Talented Visual Art students, who each completed a tonal portrait of a service veteran or identity from the First World War, under the guidance of award-winning Perth artist Mark Tweedie.
Mr Keenan said it was encouraging to see students take such a profound interest in an event that shaped our history.
“The display is a fitting tribute to the Australian men and women who served and sacrificed in the defence of our nation,” Mr Keenan said.
“Projects like these help to create a lasting legacy for those who tragically lost their lives, as well as educate younger generations about the impact of war on our communities.
“Remembrance Day is a special day to Australians young and old and I thank Balcatta Senior High School for creating such a memorable project for its students and the local community.”
The art exhibition received an $11,740 Federal Government funding grant through the Armistice Centenary Grants Program which was provided to help the Stirling electorate commemorate Armistice Day – this Sunday November 11.
